T-Shirt GSM Explained: How to Choose the Right Fabric Weight

By STARFITS · 4 July 2026 · 1 min read

What does GSM mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre — it measures how much a fabric weighs, and it's the single best indicator of a t-shirt's quality and feel.

A higher GSM usually means a thicker, more durable, more premium-feeling tee. A lower GSM means a lighter, airier shirt.

The three weights that matter

  • 150–180 GSM (Light): Soft and breathable, great for summer and printing. Can feel thin.
  • 180–200 GSM (Mid / Premium): The sweet spot for everyday premium tees. Holds shape, opaque, comfortable year-round.
  • 220–240 GSM (Heavy): Structured, boxy, premium streetwear feel. Ideal for oversized fits.

Which should you buy?

For most retail and wholesale buyers in India, 200 GSM combed cotton is the best balance of comfort, durability and value.

At STARFITS every tee is soft, heavyweight 200 GSM combed cotton, pre-shrunk to hold its shape wash after wash.

Quick buying checklist

  1. Check the GSM before you buy in bulk.
  2. Ask if the fabric is combed and pre-shrunk.
  3. Feel the weight — premium tees feel substantial, not flimsy.
